I have just added a contact form to my blog. However, I would really like to add a captcha field to it, so as to prevent wouldbe spammers flooding me with contact emails.

Is this possible and if so how?

Similarly, how do I add the same feature to comments form?

    Thanx

for comment forms, you don't need it, just activate hashcash.

for the contact form, a few checks are done already, but arguably not enough of it. it's something we'll be looking into in a later release.

Has anyone found a work around for this? One of my contact forms is getting 50 spam emails a day. Thunderbird catches many of them but not all. It's getting slightly annoying.

I am using Douglas Karr's contact form plugin. http://www.douglaskarr.com/projects/wp-contactform/

also: the contact form included in Sem 5.5 features built-in spam protection, and integrates with akismet.

I see the new contact form in 5.5, but I am not sure how to use it.

Can anyone tell me what code or quicktag to use for it?

    Thanks - Ryan

Contact form is now a widget. Add it to the inline post widget panel. Create a contact page and select the inline contact form widget.

I use contact-form-7.1.7.7.1, which is very simple, but effective, with captcha.

Mike - I got it working per your instructions and I deleted the previous contact forms that I was using. For the record, I am not seeing less spam. Spammers are still able to use the new form to send emails.

I have Askimet already configured, do I need to do something to the new contact form plug-in or is it already configured to use Askimet? Couldn't see a place to add it.

    cheers - Ryan

It is automatically enabled if Askimet is active.

But even with askimet activated, the comment form has to captcha field, it is just supposed to catch spam.

For the contact form, you can make a very nice one with cforms (deliciousdays.com) that has a captcha field.

Mike, I have the same problem. One one of my sites (with contact form in a sidebar & akismet active) I'm getting a significant amount of spam. Oddly enough I have the widget enabled on another site & am not getting any spam at all.

Can email you the details if you like

I did what someone suggested above and use the KARR plugin:

Douglas Karr's contact form plugin. http://www.douglaskarr.com/projects/wp-contactform/

It doesn't look all that great, but it eliminated all of the contact form spam, immediately.
