Semiologic 5.0 RC4 is up for grabs:

    • http://wp-pro.semiologic.com/bleeding/ (Semiologic Pro)
    • http://www.semiologic.com/software/wp-themes/sem-theme/ (Semiologic theme)

I've fixed the last batch of bugs I was made aware of, and the couple ones I've spotted on my end.

Olivia (copywriter and chief guinea pig) and I are done publishing the first version of the Semiologic 5 documentation.

While we're on the topic, I'd like to thank the Semiologic community as a whole. Without your forum questions, input, tips, and suggestions, well... I'd still be sending you to a half-dozen poorly maintained sites for documentation. I believe you deserved better. Here you go. :)

As far as I can tell, their presence transformed the application. This, beyond recognition. In my opinion, they've turned a "not always as easy to grasp as I'd like it to be" product into one that is enjoyable to read about and fun to use. To fetch the docs' latest and greatest version, visit Presentation / API Key, enter yours, and save. This will trigger a docs update.

Speaking of updates: to renew an earlier invite, the docs are maintained via the member's area. Anyone can edit the docs provided I assign them the proper permissions. I'm aware of at least 4 users who offered to contribute their tips and tricks. If you're interested in contributing your own, feel very free to email me. This is on a volunteer basis, but be sure to let me know your Amazon.com wish list link as you sign up. I'll set you up before Christmas (I'm about to take a much needed week off). :-)

This last RC is to make sure that the various bugs that were highlighted are fixed. On the top of my head:

    • docs get flushed before a forced update
    • the annoying "access denied" message that showed for those who do not renew their Semiologic Pro membership is gone
    • the warning before using the bleeding edge version is more explicit
    • the links widget now has contexts
    • "did you know" tips now show the first tip (rather than the second) upon initially entering an API key
    • write / post and page docs now show when you edit posts and pages
    • the missing newsletter is now back in FCK
    • Donovan's upload file as content bug should be resolved
    • Eric's 500 error because of the mod_security settings should be gone
    • widgets no longer remain cached as they get moved around to the header panel from sidebars
    • the WSA conflict with TinyMCE is resolved
    • permalink redirect gets killed due to conflicts with Static Front Page and Opt-in Front Page
    • We're now using the official FCK 2.5 (thanks Mike!)

    Last few notes:

    • Unless anything creepy turns up, this version is the one I'll be releasing tomorrow at around 5pm CST. I'll be shutting down the old member's area upon doing so.
    • There are still automated upgrade issues on rare servers. They'll have to wait for a later release.
    • A rare install here and there will improperly upgrade the WordPress database, resulting in apparent loss of static pages. It's not lost in reality: they merely get the wrong post_type or post_status. Mike and I decided to look into them manually as they arise. Knowing this, though, be sure to backup your database before upgrading your site.
    • http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/484608/30/0/threaded. I've tried and tested. It's a false alarm as far as I can tell.

Thanks again to all who tested!

    Hi Denis,
    Looking Forward to the webinar.
One thing that doesn't seem to happen corectly...
When somebody makes a comment I can see it in the Dashboard in the Latest Activity box, however I don't get an email advising that a comment has been made, as I did with 4.
It is set to send the mail??

Another thing? Use of the API key.
I have set up blogs for my daughter, girlfriend and a couple of other friends. They are part of my 'organisation'
with all the semiologic links and other advertising, affiliate links etc on them being mine.
I take it that there is no problem using the API key on those blogs.
I am the admin for all of them.
They write the content on those blogs.

    Best George

Are you shutting this area down?

    http://wp-pro.semiologic.com/
    http://wp-pro.semiologic.com/download/
    http://wp-pro.semiologic.com/bleeding/

If this is what you are "shutting down", where do we get v5.0? If there's a new fee that's fine, I just want to know where to go, as I am eager to start working with 5.0.

Thanks for all your hard work.

    This link: http://www.semiologic.com/software/themes/sem-theme/

Does not seem to have any content. Is there a 2.3-compatible version of the free theme?

    @Shamus:

The new Semiologic Pro members' area is going to be at http://www.semiologic.com/members/. No need to worry about bookmarks, I'm going to set up redirects as necessary.

@cbandes: woops, thanks for the notice. link corrected.

@George: When I tried commenting on my end, it worked fine. Please note that the "Not to me" plugin is always on in Sem 5, however. So if you're commenting one of your own posts to check that notifications work, you won't receive any email indeed. If you log out and use a different name/email, however, it will.

Hi Denis, when I try to activate Sem5 on WP 2.3 my whole blog vanishes - the browser becomes white with no content. I can restore the blog by deleting sem5 from my themes dir, but I can't get it to activate at all.

maybe an ftp problem then? if your server is not displaying errors on the screen, you could end up with a blank screen if you upload a corrupt file.
