Semiologic 5.5, RC-1 is up for grabs.

I've but a single item left on my todo list: Docs, docs, and more docs. So, basically, it's just as good as a release candidate. And it's the stable version for Semiologic as well.

Special thanks to all who have been participating in the debug cycle.

    What's new?

    • Inline widgets (the dropdown was moved to the second line of wysiwyg buttons, because it was knocking down the editor in IE)
    • Feed widgets (any widget in your RSS feeds)
    • Better widget contexts
    • Unlimited numbers of widgets that come in multiple versions
    • Two new panels: Inline header and footer boxes
    • Drag and drop nav menu management
    • Improved caching all over (makes sites faster)
    • Many widget improvements, a few new widgets
    • Youtube video and Google video support via Mediacaster's Enter a url feature; preview images for all video formats
    • TinyMCE 3 instead of FCKEditor used as Wysiwyg
    • An annoying update notification in the admin area, because it's important to upgrade
    • Many, many more improvements, tweaks and fixes

I've slated a week more or so worth of doc and site revamp before officially releasing this.

Please report any bug you spot in the the sticky bug hunt thread.

Only the following ad units from Ad Spaces get imported in the new ad system:

    • the inline ads
    • the default ad for each of the other location that has an equivalent context in Semiologic 5.5 (other ads, and ad distributions get dropped).

The latter covers the needs for 95% of sites and is, quite sincerely, the best I've been able to do -- and more than had been achieved in Semiologic 5.0.

Don't forget that you can use the upgrade wizard. I've tested it on hub.org and Dreamhost.org. I trust it'll also work on other hosts where the previous version has worked, since it's pretty much unchanged. However, as I've been reorganizing the Semiologic Pro files all over, the old wizard file will no longer return the expected result upon completing the files upgrade! :D

What happens then is this: The thing stalls, and stalls... and then the browser returns an error message. No worries. Leave it alone for another minute or two to make sure it's done. Then visit yoursite.com/wp-admin. It'll prompt you to upgrade your database. Do so, and you're done.

Adding to this, one bug was fixed, around beta-8, whereby images don't get upgraded properly. Re-upgrade your site if you're experiencing it and things should work fine.
