I'm hosted with Dreamhost and need to tweak the php.ini file to help speed up my site.

I see the settings in the php-sample.ini but I was under the impression that these settings are the minimum needed. I'm sure I read about 6 months ago that these can be cranked up, but can't remember to what.

If that's correct, what's the best settings for the php.ini file?

    TIA

Thanks Paul. How have you found Dreamhost compared to Bluehost?

Semi works a heck of a lot better with dreamhost compared to bluehost. The customer service with DH as been pretty good.
The only issue I had is when i first signed up with DH my database server kept on going down, but it hasnt happen in a while so , so far so good. One thing I'm still trying to get used to is the lack of a file manager and a way to make backups, something cpanel does quite well.

I have a hosting company and we offer full root access, fully managed and basically anything you could wish for. Our space and bandwidth are unmetered, so no nasty surprises at the end of the month. DreamHost and BlueHost are good companies, but I think we do it much better. Plug, plug!! The only thing we don't have is phone support.

Thanks Paul, I find DH, well, a dream ;-)

Support is superb, and I've not had a single glitch (fingers-crossed). My only beef is that I can't edit the php.ini, and DH tech won't do it for me either. So I've grabbed a PHP programmer to do it. Stupid really, any other host I've worked with had no problem editing it for me.

That's my only niggle I have about DH.

It's all about root access. If you don't have full control over your hosting, then you're nowhere. A simple thing like a php.ini file should not be an issue. For what you get and don't get, Dreamhost and Bluehost are expensive.

I don't get how you cant edit your php.ini file, Just rename the file in the zip download from sample-php.ini to php.ini and upload it to the root of your site.

On some hosts that works, but when I contacted DH support they said that I needed to manually edit the php.ini. Here's the message I got back from support...

    ---------------

    > Also should the php.ini file only be in the domains root directory or in
    > every directory?

Actually, just putting a php.ini directory won't quite be enough. If you
want to change your site's php.ini you need to install a custom version
of PHP first. For instructions on this, please go ahead and check out:

    http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Installing_PHP5

    --------------

Any ideas Paul how to fix this without hiring a programmer? I asked Mike K. but never got a satisfactory answer other than being told to put the php.ini in the root folder, which as you can see from the above DH say won't work.

Denis/Mike, do you have an answer?

Just out of curiosity, why continue to work with a host that is so unresponsive to your needs? There are plenty who will and work well with SP. I have a full root access VPS at powervps.com and have complete control over everything and the support is amazing.

    Good luck with your quest.

Because having tested tons of hosts for running sempro DH are excellent. The php.ini is the only niggle I have with them. I also have a lot of sites setup and it will be easier to pay a programmer to fix this than go to the hassle of moving all my sites over to a new host.

As Denis recommends DH as a host, I'm hoping he'll see this and be able to answer.

Just FYI, if you are on cpanel, I believe the process to go to another server also on cpanel is a snap. You should not feel like you are stuck because of that. But I understand they are good for you otherwise, just wanted to point this out.
